Offshore This past week it has been extremely windy having few boats weathering the seas. On a charter yesterday Upper Keys Sportfishing caught about a dozen tuna into the 10-15 pound size and released many more smaller than 10 lbs. Also in the mix were dolphin in the 10-20 pound range along with multiple schoolies released. A good size wahoo was lost boatside of nearly 30 pounds. Sailfish and billfish in general were not targeted. Reef  Yellowtail snapper fishing remains excellent if you can withstand the waves. Good numbers of yellowtail mixed with mangrove as well as grouper are regular guests in...

Offshore The mahi bite slowed a bit during the week but good size mahi are still to be had when concentrating on the bigger trophy fish. The tuna bite continues to be good catching nice sized tuna in the 10-15 pound class trolling feathers. The billfish bite so far is the best I have seen this early for several years. We have raised and released several blue marlin and one white marlin yesterday on a combination of live bait and a few Marlin Bost lures. Offshore The word continues to be dolphin, dolphin dolphin as known in Florida. Mahi or Dorado in the Pacific and Atlantic. Nevertheless the catches are very good to excellent. We have caught several nice bulls and cows in the 30-40 pound class as well as many gaffer sized fish from 10-20 pounds. Multiple schoolies have been caught and released. The trick we tend to use is a mahi/tuna sized lure with a chugger head available from Bost in front of a smaller ballyhoo rigged with a 7/0 hook.   Immediately on a seperate rod several feet behind we place a horse ballyhoo naked with...

April 20,2014 Islamorada Fishing Report Offshore The word right now is slammer Mahi. They have been difficult to locate as they travel alone or in small packs. Rarely do they ever follow the big schools of peanuts. Upper Keys Sportfishing caught several this past week among dozens of smaller gaffer and schoolie sized fish. The bait of choice is a rigged ballyhoo in front of a small green and yellow lure like a Bost Mahi or Wahoo sized lure. Naked Ballyhoo set right behind this lure produced incredible hook ups. Tuna were caught from football to twenty pounds in the...
